Harding Marine Services are a ships chandler, and around 75% of what we do for our customers is urgent, minimum notice, goods required onboard a vessel ranging from immediately to a couple of days. We had an enquiry received at our Aberdeen office, for a vessel calling at Invergordon, for a lifting basket, complete with forklift pockets, rigging, and certified SWL 2000kg, with marine grade coatings, with only a couple days notice before delivery was required.
We have various suppliers throughout the UK who make these items, but only to order, they do not manufacture and keep readily available stock. Due to the short notice, I not only sent to our usual suppliers, but thought I would also give Harper, a local company, the opportunity to quote, either based on them sourcing from elsewhere, or by manufacturing themselves.
Harper were the first to respond with a price and lead time, which was very competitive, and based on them manufacturing to order, giving my customer the input to change spec and painted finish to suit their project, which is exactly what our customer wanted.
This lifting basket was manufactured, painted, load tested and certified, loaded on our truck and on its way to Invergordon, whilst our office was still receiving quotes for the same project from our usual suppliers.
Throughout this enquiry and order, we had the same point of contact, we felt we were given 100% attention and priority, and at the end of the day our customer got exactly what they wanted within a minimal timescale, at a very competitive price.
Some of our orders are for full ship stores, some orders are for only a single item, regardless of the size of order, we appreciate that without certain items being delivered, it can cause a delay with a vessel’s sail schedule, potentially adding huge cost penalties to the mobilisation of a project. Because of this, our supply chain is of paramount importance to us, and Harper UK are now our main point of contact for all bespoke ‘made to order’ projects.
